II. Jn 4:43-54
Theme: Believing in the Word of God
Psalm 33:6 beautifully says ‘by the Word of the Lord the heavens were made’. In today’s Gospel reading Jesus is approached by a royal official whose son was on the point of death. his desperate need of saving his son brought him to Jesus. We as humans are broken and fragile often remember God only in the desperate situations of our lives. We need to keep in our minds that we need to encounter God as often as we can to enter into a relationship with God which is built on the foundations of faith.
Through his prayer of petition to Jesus, the royal official acknowledges his own dependence on Jesus as a source of life in the face of death. His prayer was an act of faith. The depth of the royal official’s faith was revealed when he went on to surrender to the word of Jesus. When Jesus said, ‘Go home, your son will live’, he responded immediately. Whenever we pray, we recognize our dependence on God and his Son. Our coming before the lord in humility expresses that we are in need of God’s grace and his healing touch for the betterment of our lives. Today’s gospel teaches us that it’s not enough that we come before the Lord rather we need to firmly believe in the word of God. When we believe in the word of God, it changes our lives restores our health, lessens our burdens and brings comfort in our sorrows most importantly it transforms our entire being.
