February 4th, Thursday (Memoria of St. John de Britto)
I.   Heb 12: 18-19, 21-24
II. Mk 6: 7-13
Theme: The New Covenant
Saint John de Britto, whom we are remembering in today’s liturgy celebration, was born in Lisbon in 1647. After entering the Society of Jesus, he followed the footsteps of St Francis Xavier to India where he chose to work for the humble and needy in what was then called the Madurai Mission. His patient labors, selfless zeal and genuine love for the poor won for him their confidence. Like Jesus he was "a sign of contradiction" and his success created jealousy and opposition. As a result, John de Britto died a martyr on 4 February 1693, bearing witness to Christ.
The New Covenant brings with its greater signs of the presence of God, and with it, greater responsibility for those who are part of the New Covenant.  The Letter to the Hebrews compares the Old Covenant made through Moses on Mount Sinai with the New Covenant made through Jesus in the new heavenly Mount Zion. In the Gospel, Jesus chooses the leaders who are called to announce the New Covenant by sharing the Word and by their actions.
The Old Covenant focused on rules, fears, and laws.  Most of the Old Covenant was a list of Prohibitions One “knew” that he was on the “right path” if he avoided doing the things forbidden in the laws.  The New Covenant is centered around relationships – relationship with an Abba-Father Who happens to be God, relationship with God’s other children (our sisters and brothers) in and through our Brother Jesus.  Now we are called not just to avoid the wrong deeds and do the lawful things, but also to be the persons whom God intends us to be. Thus, our being part of the Reign of GOD is not a matter of jumping through the right hoops in order to get to our destination.  Rather it is journeying along the Way to our Abba, assisting others as we all travel along the path to the New Jerusalem, our heavenly home.
