II. John 1:19-28
Theme: Knowing Oneself and Bearing Witness
Oftentimes we are good at speaking about others. We know about a person more than he or she knows. But the real tragedy is we know very little about ourselves and our real identity. Today’s gospel reading presents to us the testimony of John the Baptist. John, when interrogated by the authorities, very well would have claimed the place of Messiah but John knew who he truly was, he knew his mission and the purpose of his life. John bore the witness true to his identity and he invited others to do the same. Our life as Christians today seems to be bearing anti-witness to Christ. We bear only the tag ‘Christians’ but we don’t live according to the tag that we bear. John the Baptist bore witness to Christ in humility and in obedience to his call, we as Christians are called to bear witness to Christ in our lives but the questions remain how far are, we, living true to our Christian call? One special trait of John was his ‘inner-net connection’. John knew himself well which helped him recognize the sings of the times and prepare the way for the Lord. We live in a world well connected by the internet but poorly connected to our inner world, as a result there is lot of chaos and many end up being slaves to the things that control us from the external world. The readings invite us to know oneself and connect ourselves to God and bear witness to our Christian identity. This season of Christmas, the season of joy reminds us to recognize the incarnate Lord in our lives and share this joy with each other. Time and things pass by but the call to bear witness remain the same; so, the question is am I living life that bears witness to Christ?
